Marie Corfield: Our excellent public schools should remain free and open to everyone. We need a strong middle class, and that means creating real, sustainable jobs. Our government must be responsive to all citizens—not just those least in need of its services.

Marie Corfield: I do not support either the OSA or the expansion of charter schools. If the state wants to help struggling schools, it should give the $1billion in that program to the schools and their communities instead, so they can better fight the effects of poverty—a proven detriment to student success. Numerous studies have shown that most charters do no better than public schools. They are not the magic bullet. School of choice is a better option as long as the school is public, not private.

Marie Corfield: All schools should be funded as mandated by law. No new education initiatives should be enacted unless there is proof of what they will cost and how they will be paid for.

Marie Corfield: Pulling out of RGGI is bad for our environment. Hydraulic fracturing must not be allowed in our state due to the very real threat to our drinking water. All new construction should be fitted for solar power and green technology. Incentives for the expansion of green energy systems should be continued and include solar, wind and geothermal systems. They should be affordable for and accessible to all New Jersey citizens and businesses.

Marie Corfield: Increasing the gas tax so toll road drivers aren’t shouldering an unfair burden of supporting our transportation infrastructure is a good place to start. It must be done with voter approval. This money should be used for this purpose only.

Marie Corfield: When properly funded, the cap & rebates can bring property tax relief. However, since January '10 New Jersey’s middle class, seniors & poor have been hit with rising property taxes, reduced salaries & benefits, & layoffs. Seniors were hit hard by the cuts to Homestead Rebates & the freeze on the Senior Freeze program. Cuts to municipal & school aid meant more out of pocket expenses for everyone. Reinstating the income tax for those earning over $1 million will help bring tax relief to many.

Marie Corfield: Elected officials must remember that they are elected to serve. They work for the people of this state, and as public servants, they must be respectful of differing opinions. Pitting citizen against citizen, class against class, public against private workers fosters an atmosphere of fear, distrust and animosity. Our elected officials must work together in good conscience to make decisions that improve the quality of life for all our citizens.
